VR Cultural Experience Workshop

Walk Into the
Eastern Zhou

Not a history lecture told through textbooks and slides, but an ancient culture you can step inside. Walk past palace gates, examine ritual vessels, decode mythical beasts — then turn back and see Hong Kong with new eyes.

Ancient culture
is not textbook distance.

This is a cultural experience that fuses immersive VR, expert-led interpretation, and reflection on contemporary urban life. Participants enter a virtual space modeled on an Eastern Zhou palace and, beginning at the outer gates, are guided step by step through architecture, entryways, mythical beasts, ritual vessels, and the hierarchies they encode.

You don't simply listen to a lecture about Eastern Zhou culture. You move through it. You stop, look, and ask questions — feeling, in your own body, how ancient spaces choreograph sightlines, boundaries, status, and order.

The workshop also folds in Hong Kong culture and modern urban life, asking: when we look at palace gates, mythical beasts, ritual objects, and rank systems, can we also turn that gaze around — to better understand identity, space, and cultural symbols in the city we live in today?

01

Entering the Virtual Palace

Step into the VR space with guided onboarding and learn the basic controls. Your instructor introduces the design intent of this Eastern Zhou palace — not a model to admire, but a culture to walk through.

This isn't looking at the past — it's standing inside it.
02

Reading Gates & Thresholds

Starting from the outer perimeter, examine entrances, orientation, walls, and gates — and consider how ancient architecture quietly distinguishes inside from outside, high from low, permitted from forbidden.

Why are ancient palaces designed so you can't see through at a glance? How can a single door encode social rank? What thresholds quietly run through our own daily lives?
03

The Vessel Behind the Phrase

"To rise in rank" — the Cantonese idiom uses the word jeuk, but few realize it names a specific bronze drinking vessel tied to ritual and rank. Through the objects themselves, we trace how food, ceremony, and tableware once carried social status.

What was a "jeuk" actually, before it became a metaphor? How does a drinking cup come to encode political standing?
04

Dragons & Mythical Beasts

Dragons and mythical beasts grab attention, but we go further than mythology. Where exactly are they placed? Whose authority do they represent? And why does a creature on a roof ridge mean something different from one at a doorway?

Was the dragon always reserved for the emperor? Are guardian beasts just decoration — or something more? What functions like a "guardian beast" in Hong Kong today?
05

Returning to the Modern City

Step out of VR and back into the city. Does ancient culture still belong to us, or is it just distant history? And how do we — today — read our own society through space, symbols, objects, and rank?

Is ancient culture still our culture?
Who This Is For

For Adults

Deepens the conversation around Hong Kong culture, modern urban life, and the relationship between past and present. Suitable for public, institutional, or corporate settings.

HK Community

Designed specifically for the diaspora — a chance to ask, again, whether ancient culture still belongs to us. A place to pause inside a question that hasn't been settled.

Between ancient culture and modern people — is the only thing left really textbook distance?

For most of us, ancient culture arrives as words, images, and unfamiliar names — flattened, abstract, easy to skim. VR offers another way in. You walk through a space, you stop at things, you ask questions out loud, and a guide walks beside you.

Through palace gates, vessels, mythical beasts, and the symbols of rank, this workshop hopes to make one thing visible: ancient culture is not only a relic of the past. It is a way to rethink the city we live in now — our identities, our memories, and the strange and interesting relationship we have with what we call "tradition."
